Lime plastering

What is lime plastering and how can it benefit your home?

Lime plastering is a technique where lime-based materials are used to create a smooth, durable, and breathable finish on interior and sometimes exterior walls. Lime plaster is made by mixing slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) with aggregates such as sand, and sometimes additional additives like fibers or pozzolans (materials that react with lime to increase its strength). This mixture is applied in multiple coats onto a substrate, typically lath or masonry, and allowed to dry and cure over time. The result is a finish that is aesthetically pleasing, allows moisture to evaporate from the walls, and is less prone to trapping moisture compared to modern cement-based plasters.

Lime rendering

What is lime rendering?

Lime rendering is a similar process to lime plastering but is applied to exterior surfaces. It involves applying a lime-based mixture to the exterior walls of a building to provide protection against weathering, while still allowing the walls to breathe and manage moisture. Lime rendering is particularly beneficial in climates where there are significant temperature and humidity variations such as the UK’s wether in recent times, as it helps prevent the buildup of trapped moisture that can lead to deterioration of the building materials.

What are the advantages of using lime-based materials for plastering and rendering?

  • Breathability: Lime plasters and renders allow moisture to evaporate from the walls, reducing the risk of trapped moisture and subsequent damage to the building materials.
  • Flexibility: Lime-based materials are more flexible than modern cement-based materials, which helps them withstand movements and settling in older buildings.
  • Historical Authenticity: Lime plastering and rendering are often used in historical restoration to maintain the original look and feel of historic buildings.
  • Environmental Benefits: Lime is a naturally occurring material that requires significantly less energy to produce compared to cement. It also absorbs carbon dioxide as it cures, making it a more environmentally friendly option.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Lime finishes offer a unique appearance with a soft, textured look that many find appealing.

It’s important to note that working with lime-based materials requires specialized knowledge and skills, as the application and curing processes are different from those of modern cement-based materials. Additionally, the type of lime and the proportions used in the mixture can vary based on factors such as the specific building’s requirements and the climate it is located in. At Humphrey Homes, we’ve got years of expertise in this area, it’s one of our core specialties.
